How to Choose the Right Dog Car Seat for Your Pup's Size and Breed

Walk into any pet store and the sheer number of dog car seats can feel overwhelming. Booster seats, bucket seats, hammock-style carriers, safety-tested harnesses — and that's before you start factoring in your dog's size, temperament, and the type of vehicle you drive.

The good news: once you understand what each type of seat is designed to do, narrowing down the right choice becomes a lot more straightforward.

First, Know Why You're Using a Car Seat at All

Dog car seats serve a dual purpose: containment and elevation. Containment keeps your dog from roaming the car, which is both a safety hazard and a distraction. Elevation gives smaller dogs a raised vantage point so they can see out the window — which genuinely reduces motion sickness by helping their brain reconcile what they see with what they feel.

For smaller dogs (generally under 20 pounds), a dedicated car seat is often the best option. For medium and large dogs, a crash-tested harness is typically more appropriate — but the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Small Dogs (Under 20 lbs): Booster and Bucket Seats

Booster seats are raised platforms that attach to the back seat, elevating your dog to window height. Most have a tether that clips to your dog's harness for security. They're cozy, contained, and most small dogs settle into them happily once they're used to them.

Bucket seats are enclosed on three sides with a low front opening. They feel more den-like, which suits dogs who prefer a snug, enclosed space.

Key things to check: weight capacity, tether length, how the seat attaches to the car seat, and whether the interior is washable.

Medium & Large Dogs: Harnesses and Cargo Solutions

For medium dogs (20–50 lbs), a crash-tested travel harness that clips to the seat belt is the most practical choice. It allows your dog to sit, stand, and lie down while keeping them safely in one area of the car.

For large breeds (50 lbs+), a crash-tested harness remains the gold standard. A backseat barrier combined with a harness gives large dogs space to move around while preventing them from jumping into the front.

Brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldogs, Pugs, Bulldogs) deserve a special note: these dogs can overheat quickly. A well-ventilated crate, a cool car, and shorter travel windows are all more important for these breeds.
